원하는 사람만 얹어서 먹기 때문에 something extra라는 뜻에서 '뜻밖의 횡재'라는 의미로 발전해 쓰인다.
'힘 안 들이고 큰 돈을 벌다(ride the gravy train)','유리한 입장에 있는(on the gravy train)' 등으로 활용된다.
