우리는 워싱턴을 근본적으로
바꾸기를 갈망하고 있습니다 올해 대선이 열리는 미국은 지금 한창 경선으로 열기가 달아오른 상태다.
미국은 공화당(the Republican Party)과 민주당 (the Democratic Party)의 양당이 번갈아가며 정권을 잡고 있는데 양당 모두 자체 경선을 통해 대선 후보자를 선정하게 된다.
물론 미국에도 녹색당과 같은 군소정당이 있지만 사실상 대선의 주인공은 공화당과 민주당의 양당에서 배출되기 때문에 미국의 대통령 선거는 두 정당의 싸움으로 보는 것이 적절할 것이다.
특히 올해 민주당 경선은 여러모로 큰 화제를 불러 일으켰는데，미국 역사상 최초로 흑인 대통령을 꿈꾸는 버락 오바마 후보와，역시 미국 최초로 여성대통령을 꿈꾸는 힐러리 클린턴 후보가 맞대결한 형국이 벌어졌다는 점에서 미국뿐 아니라 전 세계의 비상한 관심을 모으고 있다.
경선 초기에는 힐러리 클린턴이 우세한 분위기였으나 변화를 모토로 새로운 바람을 일으킨 오바마의 강세가 이어져 현재는 오바마가 민주당 후보로 선출될 가능성이 높아졌다.
이번 명연설 읽기 시간에는 오바마가 노스 캐롤라이나 경선에서 이긴 후 행한 승리 기념 연설을 싣도록 한다.
오바마는 제2의 케네디라는 칭호를 들을 정도로 변화를 열망하는 미국인들의 마음을 사로잡는 데 성공했다.
문장 자체가 그다지 수려하거나 화려하지는 않지만 간결하면서도 중요한 부분을 반복하는 방식으로 강한 메시지를 전달하고 있다는 사실을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.

Well，tonight，the cynics who believed that what began in the snows of Iowa was just an illusion were told a different story by the good people of South Carolina.
After four great contests in every corner of this country，we have the most votes，the most delegates，and the most diverse coalition of Americans we've seen in a long，long time.
They are young and old : rich and poor.
They are black and white : Latino and Asian.
They are Democrats from Des Moines and Independents from Concord : Republicans from rural Nevada and young people across this country who've never had a reason to participate until now.
And in nine days，nearly half the nation will have the chance to join us in saying that we are tired of business－as－usual in Washington，we are hungry for change，and we are ready to believe again.
