지난 3호에서 우리는 '영문구조와 어휘력 독해기술에 관한 것이 잘 학습돼 있다 할지라도 읽기자료에 관한 배경지식(schema)이 갖춰져 있지 않으면 글을 충분히 이해할 수 없다'는 것을 공부했다.
이번에는 '21세기 연금술,제2의 산업혁명'에 비유되는 나노기술과 관련된 어휘 표현들과 기초적인 배경지식을 학습해 보기로 한다.

1. 나노,나노미터(nano,nanometer):10억분의 1미터
Nano means "dwarf" in Greek. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter or one-hundred-thousandth the diameter of a human hair.
나노는 그리스어로 '난쟁이'를 뜻한다.
나노미터는 10억분의 1미터 혹은 사람 머리카락 굵기의 10만분의 1에 해당된다.
2. 나노기술(nanotechnology, nanotech ):초미립화 기술
Nanotechnology is the engineering of tiny machines.The projected ability to make things from the bottom up, using techniques and tools being developed today to place every atom and molecule in a desired place.
나노기술은 초미립 기계의 공학을 말한다.
오늘날 개발되고 있는 기술과 도구를 이용하여 원하는 장소에 모든 원자와 분자를 자리 잡게 하는데, 이는 낮은 수준에서부터 (원자수준에서부터) 물체를 만들어 내는 계획된 기술이다.
Nanotechnology refers to scientific manipulations at the nanoscale. "Nanoscale" means the size is measured in nanometres, or a billionth of a metre (almost nothing).
나노기술은 나노규모의 과학적 조작을 일컫는다.
'나노규모'란 나노미터로 측정되는 크기를 뜻하며 10억분의 1미터와 같다.(눈으로 보기엔 거의 의미가 없는 크기이다)
3.마이크로 ( micro- ):아주 작은,극소의
Nano-agriculture, which relies on advances in microfine fertilizers and pesticides as well as microsensors for precision farming, is also just around the corner.
정확한 농사를 짓기 위한 마이크로센서뿐만 아니라 초정밀 성분의 비료나 살충제의 발전에 의존하는 나노 농업이 가능할 날도 얼마 남지 않았다.
4.상향식 ( top-down ),하향식 ( bottom-up ):미세 가공,자기 조립
There are two ways or methodologies to create nanoscale materials. The first one is called the "top-down" approach. What this means is that scientists will take a large object and make it smaller and smaller until you get it to the size you want. The other way to create nanotechnology is the "bottom-up" approach. What you try to do here is to create things by manipulating atoms or molecules.
