지금은 그렇지 않지만 예전에 반공이 국가의 이념이던 당시 미국의 장군인 더글러스 맥아더(Douglas MacArthur)는 한국의 영웅처럼 떠받들어졌다.
그는 6·25 전쟁이 한창이던 1950년에 UN군의 총 사령관으로 활약하며 인천 상륙작전을 감행하며 전쟁의 기세를 바꾼 것으로 잘 알려져 있다.
그는 미국의 육군사관학교를 수석으로 졸업했으며 2차 대전 중에는 미국 극동군 사령관으로 근무하며 일본의 항복을 받아낸 뛰어난 전술가이다.
그는 또한 글을 쓰기를 좋아하고 수려한 문체의 명문장을 많이 만들어낸 저술가로도 유명하다.
맥아더는 트루먼 대통령과의 마찰로 인해 사령관에서 해임된 후 1951년 4월19일 미국 의회에서 고별연설을 가졌는데 우리가 잘 아는 "노병은 죽지 않는다. 다만，사라져 갈 뿐이다"라는 유명한 문장을 남긴 이 연설은 군인이 행한 역대 최고의 연설 중의 하나로 평가 받고 있다.
오늘과 다음 호에는 바로 이 맥아더의 고별연설 중 일부를 읽어 보도록 하자.
읽어보면 알겠지만 문장이 매우 유려하며 수준이 높으니 몇 번에 걸쳐서 곱씹어 보는 것이 좋을 것이다.
⊙ 연설 원문 I stand on this rostrum with a sense of deep humility and great pride－humility in the wake of those great American architects of our history who have stood here before me，pride in the reflection that this forum of legislative debate represents human liberty in the purest form yet devised.
Here are centered the hopes and aspirations and faiths of the entire human race.
I do not stand here as advocate for any partisan cause，for the issues are fundamental and reach quite beyond the realm of partisan consideration.
They must be resolved on the highest plane of national interest if our course is to prove sound and our future protected.
I trust，therefore，that you will do me the justice of receiving that which I have to say as solely expressing the considered viewpoint of a fellow American.

Before one may objectively assess the situation now existing there，he must comprehend something of Asia's past and the revolutionary changes which have marked her course up to the present.
