▶ 요점1; 문장의 균형

영작문을 쓸 때 반드시 주의를 하여야 할 것 중 하나가 문장의 균형을 맞추는 일이다.

영작문을 하다 보면 긴 표현을 사용해 문장을 만들게 되는 경우가 생긴다.

이때 문장의 균형을 고려하지 않고 그냥 긴 표현을 늘어 놓으면 자칫 어색한 영어 문장이 되고 만다.

어떻게 문장의 균형을 맞추어 줄 수 있겠는가？

문장의 균형을 맞추는 방법은 긴 표현을 문장 뒤쪽에 위치시키는 것이다.

즉，영어에서는 한 문장 안에 긴 표현과 짧은 표현이 동시에 사용되고 있을 때，가능한 긴 표현을 문장 뒤쪽에 위치시킴으로써 나름대로 문장 구조의 균형을 만들 수 있다.

이를 가리켜 'Balanced Structure'라고 부른다.

위의 문장이 틀린 것은 아니다. 하지만 어색하다.

문장의 주어인 'A number of temptations into which we may easily fall' 이 동사 exist에 비해서 상대적으로 너무 길어 문장의 균형이 맞지 않기 때문이다.

이때 문장의 균형을 맞추는 하나의 방법은 비인칭주어 There를 사용해 긴 주어 부분을 동사와 도치시켜 문장의 맨 뒤쪽으로 보내는 것이다.

There exist a number of temptations into which we may easily fall.

많이 영작문을 해 보자. 자연스럽게 문장의 어색함을 알게 될 것이다.
