에세이를 쓰다 보면 긴 표현을 문장 내에 사용해야만 하는 경우가 많이 발생한다.

이때 문장의 앞과 뒤의 균형을 생각하지 않고 그냥 쓰고자 하는 긴 내용의 표현을 써내려 간다면 어색한 문장이 되고 말 것이다.

여기에도 방법은 있다.

영작문의 앞 부분과 뒤쪽 부분의 균형을 맞추기 위해서는 긴 표현을 문장 뒤쪽에 위치시키는 것이다.

다시 말한다면，영어에서는 한 문장 안에 긴 표현과 짧은 표현이 동시에 사용되어 있을 때 가능한 긴 표현을 문장 뒤쪽에 놓음으로써 문장의 균형을 맞추고자 노력한다.

예를 들어보자.

'A number of temptation into which we may easily fall exist'의 문장이 틀린 것은 아니다.

어색하다. 위 문장에서 주어인 'A number of temptation into which we may easily fall'이 너무 길어 동사 exist 비해 전혀 문장의 균형이 맞지 않는다.

이런 경우에는 비 인칭 주어인 There를 사용하여 긴 주어 부분을 동사와 바꾸어 문장의 뒤쪽으로 보내는 것이 균형이 맞는다.

다시 쓰면，"There exists a number of temptations into which we may easily fall" 이 훨씬 매끄러운 문장이 되는 것이다.
