▶ 일반적 실수8 : 잘못된 시제

Over the last half－century，the building of passenger airliners had grown into a multibillion－dollar industry.

위와 같은 문장을 살펴보면，어떠한 시간범위를 얘기하는지 알 수 있다.

지난 반세기 전에 시작된 행동이 현재까지 계속되는 것이다.

과거에 일어난 시점부터 현재까지 지속되는 시간대를 표현하기 위해서는 현재완료가 사용되어야 한다.

물론，위의 문장에서는 현재완료인 'has grown'이 사용되어야 한다.

만약 'had grown'이 사용된다면 승객용 여객기는 더 이상 만들지 않는다는 얘기가 될 것이다.

다음 문장을 살펴 보도록 하자.

Many superb tennis players turn professional at an alarmingly early age，but because of their lack of physical stamina，suffered early in their careers.

만약 위의 문장처럼 두 개의 동사를 가지고 있다면，첫 번째로 두 개 동사의 관계를 파악하고 현재에 논리적으로 적합한지 결정해야 한다.

이 문장에서는 첫 번째 동사는 현재형인 'turn'이다.

동작은 어떠한 특별한 시간에 이루어지는 것이 아니라 일반적인 현재이다.

두 번째 동사인 'suffered'는 단순 과거형이다.

하지만 문장 내에 'early in their careers'라는 수식어가 있지만 일반적인 현재형으로 표시되어야 한다.

알아두어야 할 것은 한 문장 내에 두 개의 동사가 있다면 두 개의 동사는 반드시 논리적인 연관 관계를 가지고 있다는 것이다.
