Essay <23> － “Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss！”

한글을 포함해 어떠한 언어든지 구두 혹은 문장 내에서 처음과 끝의 일관성이 유지되어야 한다.

예를 들어，한 문장 내에 여러 개의 목적어를 사용하였고 처음 사용한 목적어를 동명사로 사용하였다면 그 다음에 사용되는 목적어들도 가능한 일관성을 유지하기 위하여 동명사를 사용하여야 한다.

자신이 쓴 영작문을 다시 읽어보고 무엇인가 흐름이 매끄럽지 못하다면 이러한 일관성을 유지하며 문장을 작성하였는지 확인해 볼 필요가 있다.

간단한 예로 "She is young，enthusiastic，and she has talent."라는 짧은 문장 내에 전혀 일관성이 보이지 않는다.

이 칼럼을 애독하는 학생이라면 이러한 실수는 하지 않을 것이다.

하지만 또한 너무 쉽게 실수를 할 수 있는 문장이기도 하다.

일관성을 유지하기 위해서는 "She is young，enthusiastic，and talented."라고 작성하는 것이 매끄러운 흐름이다.

조금 긴 문장으로 예를 들어보자.

"Not knowing what to do and since I felt embarrassed，I called the police."라는 문장에서 대부분의 학생들은 별로 틀린 것이 없는데 하는 의구심을 느낄 수도 있다.

하지만，"Not knowing what to do and feeling embarrassed，I called the police."라는 문장을 본다면 왜 위의 문장의 흐름이 매끄럽지 못한지 한눈에 파악할 수 있다.

지난 2주 동안 중요시 하였던 반복을 피하여 문장을 작성하는 것과 이번 주 일관성을 가지는 문장과 문맥을 사용하여 영작문을 한다면 흐름의 맥을 놓치는 경우는 없을 것이다.
