지난번 빌 게이츠의 연설문에 이어 오늘은 미국의 16대 대통령인 Abraham Lincoln의 유명한 게티스버그(Gettysburg) 연설문을 싣는다.
불과 2분밖에 안 되는 이 짧은 연설은 무엇보다 민주주의의 기본 원칙인 '국민의(of the people)，국민에 의한(by the people)，국민을 위한(for the people)'이라는 명 구절로 인하여 매우 유명하다.
링컨은 미국 흑인 노예를 해방시킨 대통령으로 잘 알려져 있지만，실상 그가 남북전쟁에 참여한 주된 이유는 노예 해방보다는 미국의 국가 분열을 막기 위한 의도가 더 컸다.
즉，남북전쟁은 남쪽의 독립을 차단하고 나라를 통일된 체제로 유지하기 위한 전쟁으로，전쟁에서 북군이 승리한 결과 노예가 해방된 것이지，그가 노예 해방을 제일 목표로 두고 전쟁을 벌인 것은 아니다.
여하튼 미국 역사상 가장 위대한 대통령으로 꼽히는 링컨의 게티스버그 연설은 남북전쟁(1861~1865)이 한창이던 1863년 11월19일에 가장 치열한 격전지 중 하나였던 펜실베이니아 주 게티스버그에서 행해졌다.
링컨은 전사자를 위한 국립묘지 봉헌식이 열린 이곳 게티스버그에서 이 짧은 연설을 통해 미국의 건국이념과 전쟁의 타당성，그리고 죽어간 병사들과 유족에 대한 위로를 간결하면서도 강력하게 표출했다.
이 연설은 그 후 미국뿐 아니라 전 세계의 최고 명연설 중 하나로 남게 된다.
이 연설의 전문을 읽은 사람이 의외로 많지 않은데，영어적인 측면에서도 매우 뛰어난 문장들로 이루어져 있으니 꼭 정독을 해보기 바란다.

We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting－place for those who here gave their lives that nation might live.
It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.
