요즘과 같은 정보 홍수시대에서 효과적으로 읽고 공부하기 위해서는 정보를 취사선택해서 자기 것으로 만드는 능력이 절실히 필요하다.
넘쳐나는 정보 속에서 중요하고 필요한 것만 가려내기 위해서는 평소 요약하는 습관을 길러두는 것이 좋다.
요약을 정의해 보면 '주어진 글로부터 중요한 내용을 추출하고,추출한 내용을 독자 개인의 간결한 문장으로 변환하는 과정(Friend, 2001)'이다.
여기에는 당연히 주제를 파악하는 과정과 글의 구조에 대한 이해까지 포함된다.
따라서 요약이야말로 읽기 능력과 쓰기 능력을 가장 잘 판단할 수 있는 문제 유형이라고 할 수 있다.
그래서 요약이 대학별고사 영어 문제의 대다수를 차지했던 것이다.
그런 요약도 첫 단계는 글을 읽고 중요한 것을 가려내는 것이다.
대체로 중요한 것은 반복되어 나오게 마련이고,앞에서 설명한 것을 그 글 중에서 다시 요약해 주기도 한다.
이럴 때 요약의 신호어(signals)를 안다면,긴 글 중에서도 요약의 신호어 주변에 주의를 기울여서 글의 내용을 좀 더 빨리,좀 더 쉽게 이해할 수 있게 된다.
